Italic Bookmarks will donate $1 for each bookmark purchased to a charitable organization that promotes literacy and a love for reading in an underserved community. We are excited to make a contribution to an organization that has already helped many children since 2009 and continues to focus on the importance of maximizing donations to the cause. In May of 2009, Books for Keeps founder Melaney Smith met an Alps Road Elementary second-grader who was disappointed that school was breaking for summer. Why? When school ended, so did her access to books. This second-grader loved to read, but had no books at home. Melaney asked around and learned that there were many children in the same situation. In asking the question, “Why doesn’t somebody do something about this?” she realized, “I am somebody. I can do something.” Read more about the story behind this organization:
Books for Keeps is more than just a noble effort. They have also established strategic partnerships with publishers and booksellers in order to maximize the funds they receive. They are able to acquire new and gently used books for around $1 per book. This is one of the many reasons Italic Bookmarks has chosen to contribute to this program.
